There has been an uproar lately amongst artists and record labels for a number of reasons. Mainly, these artists are trying to figure out exactly what the labels are doing for them to help them succeed. There are always huge promises made from these companies directly to the artists. Many of them involve making lots of cash and even gifts of new homes and private jets. In reality, with the way the music business has gone, it does not seem that many of these promises are even possible anymore. If that is the truth, the question still stands. What do record labels do for artists?

In the digital age, there is not even a real need to have a record label. Any artist can upload their music online for free or for a specific price per download. The record labels only exist at this point to take money away from the musicians. It is a general rule when creating anything that money always flows to the artist. Record labels try to reverse this old adage and there is simply no reason to trust them anymore. The right artists will always be smart enough to carry on without major corporate backing.

It is hard to find decent rock stations with little to no commercials, but that is because of the changing music and media markets in modern times. Music has become such a driving force and yet is still very much a slave to its corporate masters. Without the big name companies and their promotions, the radio stations would not be able to support their broadcast expenses. The advent of online music, online radio and pod casting has changed the face of the entire industry. Radio even has to compete with Satellite radio for their share of the same market that once was controlled by radio bandwidth. This is not saying that rock stations are going away anytime soon, but they are having to make their way and compete with an eye towards the information age. Also they are having to find new ways to attract the internet era audiences, it is not just about playing albums and promoting concerts anymore. They big festivals and record labels have sponsorship. All those sponsors expect to be part of the merchandising and the on air promotional media package. The rock radio station of the past has had to quickly adapt with the times.

Music is one of the most sincere forms of self-expression there is, so it’s really no wonder there are so many bands out there. But how do you make your band stand out from the rest?

Make a Site
Design a website devoted to your band, its members and telling the world what you guys are all about. It doesn’t need to be something flashy or over-the-top, but you also don’t want it to read like a boring pamphlet. Find a unique voice and convey the information you know the fans are going to want to read.

Network
Get online and join one of the millions of online music communities. Post some samples and let people know what you are about. Collaborate and socialize with the best each forum has to offer.

Advertise
Consider purchasing ad space on high-traffic sites that offer it.

Post Samples
Post samples on your site and give the public a taste of what your group is all about. You don’t have to upload entire songs, just enough to keep the fans coming back.

And always keep track of what’s happening in your online neck of the woods. There are many different internet providers that offer on-the-go support that can be found at places like http://www.clearwireinternet.com.

Get active and let the world know you mean business. All of the great bands started out small before they became big. You have an advantage not even the Beatles had – the internet.

Nearly everyone has a social networking page these days. Facebook, MySpace, and others are an excellent platform for musicians and songwriters to get heard and gain fans. Here is a musicians guide to utilizing social networking sites to gain fans.

Two Pages

Have a regular page AND your band or musician/artist page. For example, you may have someone on your facebook friend list who digs the kind of music that you play. You can refer them to “like” your band or artist page

Be A Fan Yourself

In the area you play in, become a fan of the other bands and musicians who do the same type of music that you do.You can find a quick rundown here Add their fans to your fan list.

Search for Your Fans Locally

Unless you’re a nationally touring artist, you like play in a 50 to 100 mile radious from where you live. There is no sense in getting fans in places that you likely will never play like Togo, Africa.

Search The Friends of Your Fans

So husband and wife Joni and David are on your fan list. The chances are that Joni and David hang out with people who are a lot like them. Search their friends for the ones that are in the area(s) you perform and invite them to be your fan.

Social networking sites are popping up everywhere. They are an excellent and free way to get your music heard and gain fans. So get on that PC and get to work.

Choosing the best string for your electric guitar can be as simple as the type of music that you like. Depending on your of guitar, and your taste of music, choosing strings can be simple.

Strings come in all sorts of exotic packages, and variations these days. From coated strings, to names such as “Boomers’ and “select’, the choices are brood. Most electric guitars work best with nickel wound strings, and they are the most popular variety. The best thickness of strings is typically around .09-.10. This width is the thickness of skinniest, or bottom string. Most varieties of electric guitars work best with this string thickness, as it puts the least amount of stress on the guitar neck, and are easiest to play.

Coated strings
Coated strings such as “Elixir’ and “Alchemy Gold’ are more expensive but last longer. If you play a great deal, these strings can indeed last longer as they fight off string wear, and the erosion caused by the oils in your fingers. Uncoated strings, like a set of “Ernie Ball’ electric strings are a solid choice for beginners as well though.

Things to remember
Always clean your strings after playing with a micro-fiber cloth to keep the oils in your fingers from hurting your strings. Have your guitar “set up’ by a guitar repairperson to ensure your guitar is easy to play, and is suited to play the strings you select.

Tuning your guitar can be time consuming, especially if you are a new to playing music. Even if you aren’t new to the guitar, these ten tips and tricks can help make your guitar sound like its best.

1) Bend a String, Leave the Peg

If the note of the string is sharp, don’t automatically reach for the turning peg. Instead, bend the string hard. This yanks the slack out of string and causes it to be truer to pitch.

2) Don’t Depend on a Tuner

When using a tuner, remember that when you hit a string, it automatically goes sharp first and then flat. When you play your guitar, you are hitting with more force than what you use when tuning and so the string will not automatically go sharp first.

3) Don’t Be Too Delicate

Don’t be afraid or too gentle while tuning, especially if you don’t play that way.

4) Check, Fix, Wait, Recheck

Tune all of the strings and then check them all again to see if they are still tuned.

5) Tune to a Chord
If a particular chord is giving you trouble, tune to that chord to compensate.

6) Don’t Lay the Blame Too Quickly

Check a suspicious string against both neighboring strings to figure out which one is actually out of tune. Sometimes it’s not the one you think.

7) Avoid Extreme Temperature Changes

Drastic temperature changes will mess up tuning.

Avoid Bumping, Hitting, and Dropping Your Guitar

Physical trauma will make your guitar go out of tune.

9) Always Tune!

Whenever you pick up your guitar to play, tune your guitar. Guitars can go out of tune very easily.

10) Practice Playing in Tune

This is probably the most important tip to adhere to. Train your ear to how the notes sound when in tune.
